Students learn vocabulary by looking at antonyms and synonyms. This strategy teaches students to anchor more difficult words to easy words that they know the definition to. This specific linear array to teaches opposites. Use the handout without words as a thesaurus activity so that students can practice looking up words and ranking them on the continuum themselves. Use the handout with words to teach the shades of meaning. Have students place the words on the continuum based on which word it is closest to in meaning. Included in this bundle are big vs. little, dry vs. wet, sad vs. happy, ugly vs. beautiful, hot vs. cold, rough vs. smooth, down vs. up, and mean vs. kind.
