With Common Core putting even more of an emphasis on student vocabulary, I have been working hard with my First graders at expanding the words they use in their everyday writing. I have a packet similar to this one called “Building Silly Sentences” that gives them a chance to work with words they may not normally use and practice using them in sentences. It also helps with problem solving and critical thinking.
This packet is designed for “big kids” specifically advanced 2nd graders, as well as 3rd and 4th graders. This packet includes a set of 54 noun cards, 54 verb cards, and 54 adjective cards that are all more advanced or not as commonly used by students.
I have included directions on how to use these cards and I have also included a recording page, although your students could easily just use notebook paper to save on copies.
This activity could be used for your fast finishers, in reading centers, during your vocabulary block if you have one…and with so many cards, the game can be played over and over all year long. So, be sure you print the cards on cardstock and laminate for durability!
