Vocabulary is such an important part of math instruction, especially in the upper elementary grades as students are introduced to more and more words. Research shows that students need repeated exposure and practice with words in order for them to memorize, use and understand them. These vocabulary wheels are the perfect tool for just that! They are easy to use, fun and engaging. Directions on how to use the wheels are in the download but it’s as simple as printing, cutting, laminating (if desired) and letting your students have fun!
There are 17 wheels that cover fifth grade vocabulary terms in the following standards:
Personal finance, geometry, PEMDAS, fractions, measurement conversions (metric and customary), number sense, area/perimeter/volume, and operations
Wheels are self-checking so they are perfect for a math center. I use them as a warm-up at the beginning of my groups with my special education students and they love them!
Printing on colored paper or cardstock is recommended but it’s not necessary.
There are also blank wheels if you want to create your own! Just follow the slides/directions.
This tool is great for all levels of students too since they can be easily differentiated
For students with accommodations or who are just being introduced to the unit/words, have the clothes pins, sticky notes, or a word bank with the answers ready for them to match.
For students who are at a higher level or for units/words that should be a review, take away the word banks and just give students blank sticky notes so they have to come up with the words/answers independently.
