LINEAR WORD ARRAYS can be used in small group settings or with the whole class. In a linear word array, students place related words on a continuum and in the process build word knowledge. During the ordering, students can discuss and justify their placement of words. This allows students to make connections between known words and new vocabulary. With these age-appropriate words, students can share connections to real-life and talk about the nuances of each word, engaging in critical thinking skills.
This activity provides 50 different sets of word cards, each with 7 words to sort. Students order each set of words to create a continuum. This hands-on activity includes cards in 14 different colors and 4 distinct fonts for easy organization. This file contains 86 pages in all.
This packet also includes an option for students to work independently or with a partner at their desks or work station. There are 10 word mats that students can use to record their work in this paper-pencil version of the activity. Each word mat has 5 sets of words. The word mats contain the same words as the larger word cards.
