I have found recently that the required Common Core aligned texts must include discussion of lesson vocabulary as well as additional words in order to provide a proper foundation for comprehension. In addition, I have observed that students are being asked on tests to answer and justify questions about unfamiliar vocabulary.
This sheet is designed for differentiated vocabulary instruction. It serves as a basis for student input in vocabulary discussions. When reading a text, students can suggest unfamiliar vocabulary words for the class to discuss (using index cards or post-its, or by beginning work on this sheet). These sheets become the basis for class discussion. Vocabulary sheets can be compiled alphabetically or by text, and the compilation can be provided to students for reference and review.
This activity can be incorporated into independent, small group and whole group activities. This also allows students to practice critical thinking skills that they are required to use with unfamiliar words in test situations. Students can also practice use of reference materials in the classroom and/or online. This can be used for vocabulary in any subject. Compilations can also be used as artifacts in teacher portfolios.
