The Fall of the House of Usher is a great story – oozing with horror, terror, and the macabre – and its vocabulary is enough to stand anyone’s hair on end. Use this resource to help your students master Poe’s vocabulary... an interactive game & a classification activity cover 32 vocabulary words, using a system of categories that emphasize meaning relationships while highlighting setting, time period, and topics central to the story.
This resource has 3 parts:
• It’s in the Setting!
an interactive game that presents 9 words associated with the story’s setting. Students see each word’s image, listen to definitions, & hear the word in use in the story... all the while trying to determine its picture. They then add brief definitions to their handouts and categorize the words.
• It’s Categorical!
a categorizing activity in which students sort 23 words into categories that reflect some of the story’s main ideas and the story’s time-period. They then find a synonym for each word, using dictionaries or other resource material as needed.
• Teaching Notes & Key:
a page of teaching notes with clear directions on how to play the game, all definitions, and the game’s required excerpts from the story. PLUS extra ideas for using the material. And a detailed key.
• Game Board PRESENTATION: 1-page pdf file
• Student HANDOUT: 2-page pdf file
• TEACHING NOTES & KEY (includes CCSS alignment page): 4-page pdf file
