This lesson directly teaches students how to use context clues to decipher the meaning of vocabulary words.
Warm-Up: Students hypothesize about the meaning of difficult words within the context of 4 comic strips. After students jot down their guesses about each words' meaning, we compare these hypotheses to the actual definitions of the words in the comics. Students see how easy it was to decipher the true meaning of each word, solely by using clues in the comics.
Direct Instruction: Teacher explains the four most common forms of context clues that help us determine the meaning of difficult words. Using the comic strips from the warm-up, the teacher breaks down different sentences (in a Think-Aloud) to determine the TYPE of context clue at play in each sentence (metacognition).
Guided Practice: Teacher models completion of exercise; first, hypothesizing definition of word in sentence; second, determining the TYPE of context clue at play in the sentence; third, identifying the vocabulary word that best fits in the sentence.
Partner Work: Students complete remaining exercises in pairs.
Independent Work: Students complete remaining exercises alone.
