Vocabulary is learned best in context, yet it can be very time-consuming for teachers to pull the words from the texts they are teaching and also create enough practice around those words for students to learn and remember them. Oftentimes, we also overwhelm students with too many words, resulting in them learning even less. This assignment focuses on 5 words from classic literature with practice sentences so students can begin to recognize context clues. I also require more verbal practice throughout the reading to receive an A. By the end of the year, students remember more this way. All of the words included are SAT vocabulary practice words. This also helps meet the vocabulary acquisition and use standards.

The assignment includes 5 sections – 1. Reading sentences from the text- Students begin to recognize context clues. 2. Matching – Students must input the correct word. 3. Writing Definitions- Students use context clues to write definitions in their own words 4. Thinking about thinking: Students define the context clues they used to define the words 5. Using the Words in Conversation - Students must use the word in context sometime during the reading of the work (or for a set period of time you determine) An answer key with definitions is included.

It’s a good idea to start this lesson, speaking the words and their definitions so the students know how to pronounce them.
