Product Description
UPDATED and EXPANDED
Originally this was just an ESL Vocabulary Crossword designed for teenagers or adults as a pre-exam review exercise. I've now bundled it together with a sports vocabulary PowerPoint (with answer keys to the worksheets, exercises and project work), a second sports worksheet, and two interactive sports quizzes.
If you're covering a unit on sports, this will cover off a good deal of the vocabulary and save you worksheet and PowerPoint preparation time.
So, the original crossword worksheet remains with mixed vocabulary across sports, food, and modal verbs. Vocabulary covered is as follows:
allow / athletic / because / biscuits / carry / catch /
count / dehydrate / different / energy / exercise /
goalkeeper / harp / have / healthy / include / many /
marathon / much / must / opponent / parents / pass /
pasta / properly / racquet / roll / rule / game / salt /
serve / slippers / subjects / sweat / sweets / tango /
tell / throw / tidy / touch / waiter / youngest

The crossword clues are the word definitions and the answer key is in the PowerPoint file (animated so each answer appears only on teacher's click of the mouse).
The PowerPoint itself begins by categorizing sports - for example sports included in athletics, sports included in gymnastics, and so on. It also shows the vocabulary of equipment (e.g. bat, etc.) and playing areas (e.g. pitch).
Next the PowerPoint explains DO/PLAY/GO for sports, with a categorizing exercise.
After that, the PowerPoint has a vocabulary tree exercise so students can think back to what they’ve been seeing in the slides.
The PowerPoint also has a little light game of chance to give the students a little breather.
After that, the PowerPoint goes into the answer keys for the crossword (mentioned earlier) and the second worksheet. This second worksheet contains the following:
Firstly, a fill in the missing letters of the sports name and match it to the picture (21 pictures).
Next, a little writing exercise to get the students using phrases such as “really into” or “can’t stand”.
Then, another writing exercise to practice present perfect for experience (often used when talking about sport).
The final part of the second worksheet is a short reading passage (questions and answers about the passage are in the PowerPoint.
The PowerPoint finishes by setting the students a project (or homework if you prefer), where they have to answer 10 open end questions about sport.
I've added a couple of interactive quizzes too. The first is about sports equipment... for example, "In this sport, you slide and glide on skates, and hit the puck with a stick. (=Ice Hockey)." The second is an interactive crossword (anagram style) for sports vocabulary. I use the word "interactive" because they will open in any web browser (just open the file, or right click and open with if you have a browser preference, no internet connection required) and you click on the choices or buttons as directed. Rolling score is automatically calculated.
I hope everything is useful to you.
