When teaching "-tion" and "-sion," a review of parts of speech and an infusion of vocabulary can be an added bonus to the spelling generalization. Most words that end in "-tion" or "-sion" are formed by adding the ending to a verb. Given a pattern, students can make the connection between words like "transform" and "transformation." A student with skill in reading 2 syllable words can experience success decoding 4- and 5-syllable words with the common word endings" -tion" and "-sion."
Print the 55 word cards on smaller (10 per page) or larger cards (5 per page). Students will enjoy matching the verbs with the nouns, and they will begin to create their own "-tion/-sion" words with other verbs.
