Voice volume is an issue for many students. The growing brain of your students may not always have the ability to remember our voice volume rules. Because of this, it is recommended to keep revisiting this with your class. A color coded scale adds a visual component to assist students in better recognition of the various levels. This
simple social story gives 5 levels of common voice volumes for school. It starts with “0”, which is no talking, and goes to “4”, which is screaming or outside voice. Many teachers will print page 5 to use as a handy reference to physically point to in the classroom. The story goes level by level to insure that your students will comprehend
each level. There is a practice page as well. The story also reiterates that it is only the teacher’s job to set the voice volume. Additionally, a fun game, once you have reviewed the social story, is to practice the levels as a class by writing a sentence on the board and having your students say it out loud in the voice volume you point to.
