17 slide PowerPoint with my audio recording of Mary Oliver Poems. Questions and answers for close reading analysis of 8 poems. 3 introductory slides of notes to take on poetic voice. My questions are poetic device-oriented and prompt students to identify terms and discuss their effect in the poem. "Analyze the succession of imagery here. Why does she layer it in this order?" "How is the end of fall an appropriate setting for her subject matter?" "In what way is carpe diem a theme in this poem?"
Overall focus of this lesson is on showing students the importance of voice in writing poetry. We study these poems by Oliver and analyze exactly what her voice is, what's unique about it and how she conveys it. Packet of the poems with my detailed analysis questions beside them is also available. After this poetry unit, I have them write their own poem and part of the rubric includes attention to voice. Detailed poem assignment and rubric available.
