This is a book of poetry, each poem depicting the life of Fannie Lou Hamer, the
“spirit of the Civil Rights Movement.” I have created questions for students to
answer about each poem, which involves critical thinking. I have also asked
students to give their reactions to the events/beliefs Fannie Lou Hamer tried to
change during her lifetime. This book gives an exceptional timeline of events that
bring forth the word injustice. Students will also research the Jim Crow Laws in order to help them comprehend the background of Fannie Hamer's life. Students should become familiar with many of the “unknown” people who fought for equality for United States citizens. The post-reading activities are differentiated and will show each student’s comprehension of the Civil Rights Movement.
