This is a WONDERFUL activity to open a unit on continents, countries, cultures, travel, or tourism.

Ask students to sit in a circle in the classroom. Each student should receive one of the cards in this download. If you have fewer students than cards, some students should receive two cards. On each card is a quote about a country. This quote may be about a landform, it may be a proverb, it may be a writer’s perspective on a country, or it may be an idea someone once shared about the culture of a continent or country. Students should practice reading their quote and then, one by one, students should share their quotes aloud.
Allow the students to center discussion about a quote that sticks out to them.
If a student has an idea to share about a particular quote, allow them to. Allow students to draw connections between their quotes. Allow them to get a sense of each continent through the quotes. Allow them to define what is important or similar between the quotes. Allow the students to drive the discussion and help facilitate learning!
On the bottom right corner of each quote card is the continent that quote is associated with. This will help students recognize which continent their quote is about.
