Scientists believe that there are anywhere from 3-30 million species on Earth! There is such a range in this statistic because animals live in hard to get to places like the top of Mt. Everest and the bottom of the ocean floor feeding off of hydrothermal vents. All animal species are different for a number of reasons like: the way they get their food, whether or not they have a backbone, where they live, adaptations that help them to survive and their physical features like whether they have skin, fur or feathers or two or four legs. In this lesson, students will create their own animal species and learn how to write the animal type and name (genus species).
