Our students are faced with a lot of stressors throughout the school day even more so for our students with ASD. Whether those stressors are work load, difficult work, social difficulties, emotional difficulties, communication deficits, etc.
Teaching self-regulation strategies are essential to helping our students especially those with ASD be able to function in their school, home, and community environments. As educators we cannot remove all stressors from students lives but we can teach how to deal with those stressors.
When using self-regulation techniques in my classroom, I schedule in relax times throughout the school day so that we can model and practice the skills. Then once the student needs to practice those skills when a stressor occurs they are pulling from previously learned skills.
