I use this hands-on activity as a way to reinforce the concept of volume within my science classroom; however this could also be used as a math activity. This packet includes all the directions needed to create the 3-dimensional models of different shapes and the mobile to display them. It also includes the patterns (nets) needed.
I have always found that having the 3D shapes for my students to hold and manipulate in their hands provides a reinforcing support that allows many learners to make a real-world connection to the concept. As well as covering the topic of volume, these models could be used to look at other 3D shape topics including surface area and mathematical nets.
To differentiate this activity, I use the simpler shapes for my lower students and challenge my higher level learners with the more complex shapes/equations. You can resize the 3-D shapes to make them as big or small as you like.
