This creative and fun volume project will keep children engaged while exploring volume. Combining art and math, students will learn measurement standards. Our students were highly motivated to finish their houses so that they could have fun decorating them. This project is not just aligned to the Common Core, it was created for the Common Core. This packet has been carefully revised and is now error-free so that you may purchase with confidence.
There are four parts to the project:
•Create nets for rectangular prisms
•Explore and calculate the volume of ten rectangular prism nets using the grids on the nets that measure 1 centimeter square
•Plan and a winter wonderland house using student selected prisms within a specific volume range and then decorate the houses
•Plan and build a village using perimeter and area to create lawns and fences with unlimited possibilities for a decorated class village
Everything is included making this a print-and-go activity. The first and last part of the project are optional leaving you many choices for how extensive you make this project. It can be done in a couple of days or, if you choose to have the class make a decorated village, a full week. Once their structure is built they can decorate using construction paper, the
provided black line clip art, paste, light candy, glitter, sequins, cotton balls,
pipe cleaners and any light-weight art materials.
While it covers many parts of the three 5th grade MD CCSS, it makes a great introduction to a volume unit you plan to teach later or a fun review if you have already taught volume. The extensions make it appropriate for grades 6 and 7.
PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING: This is the same exact project as our Gingerbread Volume Project. We changed the theme to winter to make it appropriate after the holidays. Please do not purchase if you already own our Gingerbread Volume Project.
