Volume is a huge part of the Measurement and Data standards for fifth grade! The Treasure Hunt is a quick review of finding volume that my students love. It takes my students (in groups of 3 working together) about 15 minutes to complete it. Then we went over it for about 10 minutes so that's why I chose teaching duration of 30 minutes.
There are 6 word problems and an answer key is included.
Skills Needed: how to calculate volume for rectangular prisms, multiply and divide large numbers, multiply decimals
When the students fill in the blanks, it will tell them that the treasure is located at the podium. I place a small picture of a treasure at the podium and the group that gets the treasure can turn it in for another treasure of teacher choosing.
We played this just today and they enjoyed it immensely.
The Treasure Hunt is one part of a four part BUNDLE available: Four Math Treasure Hunts: A BUNDLE of FUN
This product is part of a BUNDLE that has Volume, Coordinate Grids, and Line Plots: Geometry and Measurement BUNDLE
For the included Matching Cards activity:
Matching cards that review finding volume with V = L x W x H and also some deeper thinking problems like working backward from knowing the volume and finding the length are included. This set is enough for a class of 24 students.
I place the cards facedown and the students love when I put the stopwatch timer on the board and I time how long it takes them to find the correct partner, get their matching papers checked by me, and then sit with their partner. They love to beat their last best score or try to beat another class in quick time!
There is a page included that explains the Volume Game that my students enjoy playing very much!
