This is a project to be used with upper elementary school students to apply and analyze the concept of volume. The students get to create their own city using isometric dot paper, which can be found online and printed for free. It allows students to be creative and still work with mathematics ideas. In my example city, I included what I would want in my own city. I have had students make rectangular prism cars on their streets. I have seen cat themed cities, Pokemon themed cities, even "outer space" cities set on other planets! My students were very engaged and involved with their projects. We did a rough draft where we practiced using rulers and creating the shapes, then we made final copies which were colored and displayed in our hallway. I hope you enjoy this project as much as I do!
