"Volume: Cubic Solids and Half Cubes" is the third installment in a series of mathematics units on 3-D volume and geometry designed for grades 3-6 and aligned to the Common Core Standards. Included in this file packet are reproducible handouts introducing the formula for volume, H x L x W = V, as well as a wide variety of printable worksheets (over 50 pages!) for whole class practice, individual practice, challenge practice, math centers, and/or homework.

Note: "Volume: Cubic Solids and Half Cubes" is the third installment in this series. The first half - and bulk of - of this unit, "Cubic Solids," is devoted to problems in which students must calculate the volume of large cubes and rectangular prisms using the formula H x L x W = V. To achieve a certain level of consistency, more "complex" solids, such as triangular prisms, cylinders, oblique rectangular prisms, etc. are NOT included in this unit. This unit is devoted to large cubes and rectangular prisms exclusively.

The second half of this unit, "Half Cubes" feature problems that contain exactly that: A mixture of whole cubes and half cubes. These problems were created solely to provide the children with an added challenge and force them to examine 3-D geometric figures from different points of view. Once your students have mastered "Half Cubes," the "regular" cubic unit problems seem like the proverbial "piece of cake."

For those of you who bought the first two units, "Volume and Visible Cubes" and "Volume and Hidden Cubes," this third unit is designed to carry your students forward - well equipped and fully prepared - straight smack dab into the realm of standardized testing.

And, yes, the snails are back in a variety of situations to not only help your students master 3-D figures more quickly and easily, but also to let them have fun (gasp!) while they are learning!

I strongly recommend using plastic snap cubes as hands-on learning tools (manipulatives) in conjunction with the printable worksheets in the first half of this unit, "Cubic Solids." This way, the children can actually see and touch the hidden cube (or cubes) in a given figure as opposed to just simply imagining them (which often might be difficult for some students.) Moreover, this makes for a very easy math center to not only set up quickly, but also facilitate with minimum effort.

Once established and underway, "Volume: Cubic Solids and Half Cubes" virtually runs itself and can be put to a variety of uses. (The same also pertains to "Volume and Visible Cubes" and "Volume and Hidden Cubes" the first two units in this series.) This might prove especially useful if you finish your math lesson early, have five or ten extra minutes remaining, and need to fill in the extra time. Simply distribute one of the many worksheets and, with very little direction, the children will know what to do. You might also wish to distribute a worksheet to those "distractful" students who finish their class work early (being, after all, that the primary objective of any class work is to finish as quickly as possible - and before everyone else!!!) Finally, "Volume: Cubic Solids and Half Cubes" makes for a good test prep review especially in the rushed "crunch" time just before state standardized testing begins.
