This mega packet combines my three previously posted math units on volume - "Volume and Visible Cubes," "Volume and Hidden Cubes," and "Volume: Cubic Solids and Half Cubes" - into one huge packet offered at a substantial discount rate. Basically, you are getting each unit at 33% off, or putting it another way, you are purchasing the first two units and getting the third unit completely free!
Included in this mega packet are every reproducible handout from all three units, ranging from the introduction of "visible cubic units" to "hidden cubic units" to "cubic solids" (and even "half cubes.") I teach 5th grade mathematics, and when my children were finished with these three units, the problems on our standardized test seemed like a "walk in the park." Better yet, though, the children had fun completing the problems throughout the year and always looked forward to them.
Altogether, there are approximately 130 pages here that can be utilized as printable worksheets for whole class practice, individual practice, challenge practice, math centers, and/or homework.
As you will note in my free worksheet "A Cubic Units Sampler" (offered at my store, "The Teacher's Twilight Zone,) as well as the previews and thumbnails in the individual aforementioned volume units, every worksheet - every problem - is peppered with snails. These not only help the the children differentiate between the three dimensions, but also serve as reference points. Best yet, they also intrigue, delight, and make schoolwork more interesting and fun!
As always, I recommend using plastic snap cubes as hands-on learning tools (manipulatives) in conjunction with the worksheets in all three units. This way, the children can actually see and touch the cubes in a given figure as opposed to just simply imagining them (which often might be difficult for some children at first.) Moreover, this makes for a very easy math center to not only set up quickly, but also facilitate with minimum effort.
Once established and underway, each unit virtually runs itself and can be put to a variety of uses. This might prove especially useful if you finish your math lesson early, have five or ten extra minutes remaining, and need to fill in the extra time. Simply distribute one of the many worksheets and, with very little direction, the children will know what to do. You might also wish to distribute a worksheet to those "distractful" students who finish their class work early (being, after all, that the primary objective of any class work is to finish as quickly as possible - and before everyone else!!!) Finally, the worksheets included in each unit make for a good, yet short, test prep review especially in the rushed "crunch" time just before state standardized testing begins.
All 130 pages are also rendered in black and white, thus producing crisp, clear copies every time.
