In this volume measurement and percent error lab, students are evaluated on their ability to properly follow lab procedures, use correct laboratory tools, and measure volume. These exercises serve as a great introduction to the laboratory environment before students begin using any strong or dangerous chemicals.
Safe, cheap and easy to prep!
This activity is inspired by an older rainbow lab. Students use colored water to practice measuring out specific volumes into graduated cylinders and pouring the fluid into test tubes. During this exercise, students are encouraged to pick from a variety of glassware and choose the most accurate tool for the volume to be measured. Then, they compare their experimental volumes to the theoretical volumes to determine their level of accuracy by calculating percent error.
The analysis questions include calculating experimental values and percent error, constructing a data table, explaining possible causes for error, and creating a bar graph.
