My students were struggling with volume. It was the first year that they had to rely on a formula to get the correct answer and they were struggling to grasp the meaning of V=Bh and V=1/3Bh. Notes, Demonstrations, Worksheets and even hands on activities were not working. I was at a loss. Then I thought up this really cool idea: Maybe I should take the math out the picture, and have them focus their attention on the process.
This task card set is designed to have the students think critically about the PROCESS of solving volume problems. There are 8 problems (two for rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, square based and triangle based pyramids respectively) that are completely solved for the students. They won't have to do any calculations at all.
Instead, they will go through each problem step by step to recreate the 3-D shape that is being solved. They will have to use their knowledge of formulas and substitution to create that 3-D shape. Each step in the process gives a clue to the final shape.
