Use these performance based assessments as practice tasks for the rigorous state tests. These task cards offer practice for both content standards as well as standards for mathematical practice.
This problem-solving approach to teaching is a great way to keep your students engaged in your math lessons. These twenty tasks can be used to teach the volume standards giving students the chance to explore key objectives in standards 5.MD.3, 5.MD.4 and 5.MD.5.
Each task will take students approximately 20 minutes to complete, though some will take longer. Use these tasks for whole class instruction after students have worked individually, in pairs, or in groups. They are also ideal for center work, rotations, early finisher work or for an assessment at the end of your volume unit.. All of these challenging tasks are designed to promote discussion and stretch your students’ critical thinking so that they have a deeper understanding of volume.
There are two parts to each task. Part 1 asks students to solve a problem that has either multiple solutions or multiple solution paths and in some cases they have both. Part 2 asks students to explain their methods and justify their answer. Part 2 could be a written explanation or a related discussion topic for the group or class. A detailed answer key is provided as well as two different styles of answer recording sheets for students to record their answers on.
Your students will be asked to:
• draw nets and prisms
• cut out a net and fill the net with cm cubes to measure volume
• determine possible dimensions given a volume measurement
• design for real-life situations
Your students will learn how to:
•identify attributes of rectangular prisms
•calculate volume based on filling a prism with cubes and by decomposing a prism
•explain that volume does not change when orientation of a prism changes and use the associative property to explain
•apply additive reasoning to calculate the volume of a solid made up of more than one prism
•select appropriate units of measurement (linear, area, volume)
•describe the relationship between the dimensions of a prism changing and the volume change
for the perfect practice problems
that correspond to these Task Lessons.
