Task cards with problems that cannot be solved with a memorized algorithm!
These 40 task cards
are definitely going to challenge your students! Critical thinking is imperative and the CCSS standards ask students to go far beyond practicing the algorithm. These task cards will give your students the practice they need to solve real-life problems using reasoning and explaining their solutions. We found that our math books provide plenty of practice using the algorithm and some fairly easy word problems that can be answered using the algorithm, but very little authentic problem solving with the requirement to explain their reasoning.

To prepare our students for the new rigorous testing in spring, we found our students need practice with critical thinking so that they have a deeper understanding of volume. We designed these challenging tasks to promote discussion and stretch their thinking.
These practice cards are based on CCSS giving students the chance to learn key objectives in all three standards covering volume: 5.MD.3, 5.MD.4 and 5.MD.5.
They are ideal for practice using them individually or in groups, as warm-ups, center work, rotations, early finisher work, assessment or as exit tickets.
These practice task cards are perfect for practice after using our Teaching Tasks
for your lessons. Click here for the link to our more challenging and extensive teaching tasks!
