Description

Engage students in hands-on, relevant learning with this volume and surface area project. Students begin by analyzing a real scenario and using volume, surface area, and reasoning to answer three prompts. The focus of the discovery worksheet is on cones, cylinders, and spheres as aligned to the eighth grade CCSS. Then students work in groups of 2-3 to design, construct, and market a "playdough container." Students can select any three-dimensional shape for the project. They are tasked with the responsibility to attain a set volume, minimize surface area, and market their container to both parents and students in the form of a well-written persuasive letter. Students sketch their ideas; select the appropriate dimensions; calculate the volume, surface area, and cost; construct a net, create the container; and write a letter. My students and I LOVE this project!
