This fun and hands-on activity provides students with the opportunity to create three-dimensional shapes and then calculate the volume and surface area of their hand-made shapes! Students will create rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones. The shape cutouts are not included, but they can easily be obtained through on-line images. This activity includes clear step-by-step instructions for students to create the shapes, think of real-life examples that represent each figure, measure the dimensions, and calculate the volume and surface area of each shape. There are two versions of this activity: one version includes volume and surface area formulas and the other requires students to obtain the formulas. Students can utilize this engaging hands-on project to discover the volume and surface area of shapes that they create.
