This packet contains 12 geometry problems that really challenge students. Students must first determine if the problem is asking them to calculate volume or surface area. Then, they need to determine what shapes make up the figure in order to perform the necessary calculations.
Students work in small groups of 3-4. They work each of the problems together, one by one. When they come to a unanimous and conclusive answer, I ask them to raise a hand for a 'teacher check'. They earn points for a correct answer. There are up to 5 attempts to correctly answer each question for points. If they get the question right on the first try, they get 5 points; 2nd try, 4 points; 3rd try, 3 points – and so on. The team with the most points at the end of the class period wins.
