PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

White Bear Lake in Minnesota has been leaking: it's connected to an aquifer and as groundwater use for homes and industry has increased, the lake has been draining away into the ground! This is a topic that's been in the news a lot, because lakeside homes have turned into swamp-side homes and the town is losing its namesake lake. What kind of math can we use to think about the volume of a lake? How does volume vary with lake level?

This packet has three activity worksheets, on modeling the volume of the lake, graphing how volume and lake level are related, and looking at average rate of change of surface area given change in lake level. These use real data about White Bear Lake and include questions to provoke discussion in class. Feedback appreciated!
