In this activity, students will assess how they feel about voting restrictions such as gender-based voting, race, poll taxes (voting is expensive!) literacy tests, civics tests, voting for prisoners, etc.
Use this worksheet before teaching them voting laws so they an assess what restrictions they see as legitimate. I had them break into groups of 3, like circuit courts, and come to a decision together, then we kept track of what each circuit said, comparing notes and ideologies. My kids loved this. We break into circuit courts all the time now to debate issues.
I've attached a notes sheet to show how actual courts have decided on these issues. They really liked seeing where they agreed or disagreed with actual courts.
