Product Description
Integrate Social Studies, Reading, Writing, and Art!

Teach students about voting and elections through read-alouds, partner and independent reading, shared writing, and even guided Internet exploration of student-friendly websites.

Students share information in writing and whole group discussions, explore the difference between fact and opinion, create process and informational charts, and create a large “graffiti wall” mural with information they’ve learned.

Topics include the history of voting, voting as a civil right, the difference between fact and opinion, the democratic process, and current elections.

Most of the reading in this series of activities is informational text. There are also suggested fiction read-alouds included to supplement and expand student learning.

Very little preparation is required for this series of activities, other than gathering the reading material. No copies are required, although four student response templates are included for optional use. Materials needed are already most classrooms (chart paper and markers, sticky notes, writing paper, crayons, etc.)

Activities, skills, and concepts addressed include:

• activating prior knowledge about voting
• listening to and responding to various read-alouds
• browsing through books about voting to find information
• discussing learned information about the voting process
• distinguishing between fact and opinion
• sorting, organizing, and analyzing information
• creating a “graffiti wall mural” about voting
• writing an opinion essay about a chosen candidate
- responding to reading and discussion

This unit framework spans just under two weeks, depending on how much time students are given for browsing and reading.

Included with this unit framework is a list of suggested books for read-aloud and partner reading.

Also included is a copy of my art lesson, Patriotic Colors Cut Paper Collage (also available to purchase as a single, stand-alone lesson). Another version, Patriotic Colors Torn Paper Collage, is designed for younger children.
