Vowel Cross can be used as a word work center, small group game, or whole class activity. Although this is a simple game, it can be quite challenging to place the letters in such a way as to enable the word to be easily completed. For young readers it is best to use Vowel Cross as a NON-COMPETITIVE CENTER ACTIVITY, where students can try out and change letters until they complete the vowel crosses. For SMALL GROUP PLAY, students take turns turning over a letter card and trying to use the letter chosen to add to or complete their vowel crosses. "Take 2", "Steal" and "Players Choice" cards add excitement to the game.
FOR A WHOLE CLASS ACTIVITY, photocopy the black and white game sheets, or place them in a dry erase sleeve. Everyone will be playing with the same letters, but which letters are chosen for use by an individual student and where he/she places them will determine who completes their vowel crosses first.
