UNO™ Style Game - Long E (Vowel Digraph EA) Card Game
Match It! is a card game that is played in a manner which is similar to the ever-popular game of the UNO™. This Match It! card game uses 25 words with the vowel digraph EA (Long E). This game includes 19 blue word cards, 19 red word cards, 19 green word cards, 19 yellow word cards, and 14 action cards (Pick 2 Cards, Reverse, Switch Hands, and WILD). This game is a fun way to practice reading words with the vowel digraph EA (long e).
How to Play:
After shuffling the deck thoroughly, the dealer gives each player 5 cards and places the remaining cards face-down in a pile on the table. This is the draw pile. The dealer flips the top card of the draw pile face-up and places it next to the draw pile. This will become the discard pile. Play proceeds in a clockwise manner from the dealer. Player 1 must play a card from her/his hand that matches either the word, color word, or number word of the card that is on top of the discard pile. The player must read aloud all the words on her/his matching card before discarding it. If the player is unable to match the word, color word, or number word on the card, s/he must draw a card from the face-down draw pile, and the next player takes
her/his turn. If a player gets an action card in the deck, it may be played on that player’s turn instead of a word card, as long as the color matches. The next player must then follow the directions on that card. When a player has only one card left in her/his hand, s/he must say “Match It!” to let the others know s/he is about to go out. A player who neglects to call out “Match It!’ at the appropriate time must draw an additional TWO cards from the draw pile. If all of the face-down cards on the table are picked up and no one is out of cards at that time, then the face-up cards must be reshuffled to continue play. When a player plays her/his last card, s/he is the winner! The winner becomes the dealer for the next game.
Match It! works best with 3 or 4 players and can be used during small group instruction, as a free-choice game, or as a literacy center. You can even send the game home so that children can practice their words with their parents/siblings!
