I made this cute little fellow to help my kindergarten students with their vowels.
Each child gets one Vowel Owl, plus a strip entitled, "My Vowel Owl" with five vowels on it. Children were delighted to color in the owl and then cut out the title to glue on the branch. They colored and cut out the vowels, which were then added to the owl's belly. Depending on one's fine motor skills, students cuts the vowels into squares or tries cutting around the circles. I used Vowel Owl in my literacy center, and children enjoyed it so much, they requested additional copies for Rainy Day Recess.
As a movement piece, especially for my kinesthetic learners, we also, "Punch out the vowels." We all raise our fists to our shoulders, and shout, "A! E! I! O! U!" while alternating punches in the air. When we get to, "And sometimes Y!" we stick our arms straight up in the shape of the letter Y. Children love this burst of movement, and as an added bonus, they painlessly memorized their vowels. Give it a try!
For $1, you will receive an electronic file with two documents. One is the black and white image of the Vowel Owl. The other is a sheet with titles and vowel strips for three students.
