How fun to learn through song and movement! Then add the personal touch of imaginary friends, and young students are ready! These lessons include 5 posters and companion songs for introducing the short vowel sounds. Each poster has a Vowel Pal whose name represents his sound and that Vowel Pal's show and tell (an object representing that vowel sound in the initial position). There are motions to go with each song enabling children to make strong connections between the vowel sound and the letter representing that sound. The lessons include phonemic awareness, letter/sound manipulation activities, and "word wall" words.
When I introduce each vowel sound in my classroom, I display the corresponding Vowel Pal poster before the students arrive. I let the children discover the new Vowel Pal. I'm as surprised as they are to see that a new friend has joined our class! We then proceed to make the new Vowel Pal feel welcome by doing activities with his sound. What fun!
An interactive SMARTboard or computer program containing the short-vowel Vowel Pals is available. This download has activities for building word families and the Vowel Pal songs. It makes the Vowel Pals come to life! I hope you check it out!
