Each page has a variety of words that all have the same target vowel phoneme (sound). However, there are a variety of grapheme (letter) patterns that are seen in English words that all have the same phoneme (sound). For example, the “a” in baby, the “a” in cake, the “ai” in rain, the “ay” in hay, and the “eigh” in eight ALL have the same phoneme (sound), but different graphemes (letters). There are also blank spaces on each sort for students to draw/write their own words.
The goal of these sorts is to see the phoneme and grapheme patterns that are present in different words. Students can practice with both the pictures/words together or for a bigger challenge the students can cut off the words and try sorting only the pictures into the correct grapheme categories.
These sorts can also be separated into smaller parts – for example sorting only the “ai” and “ay” words (not the “a” or “eigh” or “a_e” words). The sorts can also be combined to increase the level of difficulty by using multiple phonemes. Sorts can also be used to compare words that have the same graphemes (letters) but different phonemes (sounds) – for example, “a” in acorn and “a” in swan.
These word sorts are meant to be printed and cut out for individual students or groups to work on. These can also be laminated to be used repeatedly. There is also a blank sort template at the bottom so that teachers (or students!) can make up their own sorts.
