Short Vowel sounds are one of the most important skills young readers need to learn. I have been using this technique for over ten years with my kindergarten students and had great success.
Here are five short vowel posters for you. Teach the letter name, the short vowel sound and a movement for each picture. You’ll soon see kids decoding and using the techniques such as itching for short i.
Aa – apple – pretend to eat an apple
Ee – echo – put your hand up to your ear and pretend to listen
Ii – itch – scratch the itch on your arm
Oo – move your fingers to resemble an octopus swimming in the ocean
Uu – raise your hands to point up
