Vowel Sound Games!
This product is perfect for kids who need extra practice with short and long vowels sounds.
This product started out as just a bookmark for a child I would with who needed a visual to go along with the letter to help him remember the sound. He always had it with him and it helped immensely with both his reading and writing.
However, as I was making that bookmark, I decided I would make some card games that I could play with him or he could use with other kids in the class.
The great thing about this product is you can use all six games with both sets of cards! There are two sets of game cards; one with short vowel pictures (most are CVC and one syllable) and the other is long vowel pictures, (most are CVCe and 1 syllable).
There are five card games and six Bingo cards, equaling six games that can be played with long or short vowel cards.
Here’s what’s included:
Bingo-six game cards-you provide the markers for covering up
Take 2-card game
Go Shop-a Go Fish-like game
Need for Speed card game
Wild Rabbit-version of Crazy 8s
Memory Match-a Concentration-like game
One bookmark with short and long vowels pictures/letters
Three Labels for directions that can be attached to white storage envelopes (I like 6 x 9 white shipping envelopes-available on Amazon)
Two labels for a storage bin; large measures 5.5 x 3.5 and small 4 x 3
Answer keys for both sets of cards
77 short vowel cards, numbered for convenience
54 long vowel cards, numbered for convenience
However, the best part is this product also comes in black and white!
If you are using the color sets, I would print them on cardstock and laminate and store them in separate envelopes with the answer keys.
If you are using the black line set, I would use colored cardstock and use two contrasting colors so that they are not mixed.
These card games can be used during down times during the day, as part of a literacy center, or used in a small flexible needs group, focusing on vowel work. Also, having a parent volunteer, a student mentor, or a para educator work with groups of kids would be easy to do. as well.
You could also send home the black line set with parents to play the games with their kids.
The bookmarks can be used with any student who has difficulty with distinguishing the sounds. Perfect for ELLs too.
