Are you looking for a fun way to sort the OW OU vowel teams into the correct sounds they make?
This is definitely what you are looking for! Your students will love making the clown to sort the sounds on the clown's collar
Here is what is included in:
1. Clown and collar images to run off.
2. Directions for use and ideas for use.
3. Student worksheet.
4. OW and OU cards to differentiate instruction.
5. Collar OW and OU heading for sorting cards and to differentiate
This activity can be used for Literacy Stations or as independent work. Students will sort OU and OW words. They will distinguish between the ow that says /OW/ and the ou that says /OW/.
If used in its complete form, the children will also make a clown with a collar, writing the words under the correct headings on the collar of the clown as seen in the preview.
I use this activity for first grade when we learn the sounds of /ow/ and /ou/.
I teach the vowel pairs and the sounds they make before I have the children do this activity.
I usually teach many reading foundational skills through mini lessons during my Morning Meeting. In these lessons the children find the words or skill in the message and we circle it and then talk about it.
Sometimes I use a discovery method and highlight all the words that have the skill I am teaching and allow the students to discover what is the same or different about the highlighted words.
I have included ideas for differentiation in which you can use the word list for stronger students and the word cards for those who may have difficulty reading lists of words.
The end product is the same. It should also be noted that I have written in the directions for the children to read their list of words to someone.. The “listener” then signs the page ( in this case, the clown’s collar). This is for accountability as well as supporting responsibility and independence for learning.
Another way to use the word cards is to laminate and cut them out. Tape the cards around the room and then the children use the sorting collar to write the words under the correct heading as they roam independently around the room.
