This set of read and write the room centers includes two differentiated sets of word cards for each vowel digraph or diphthong pair.
The first set of cards in each set includes pictures and written words for students to decode, sort, and copy.
The second set has dashes in place of the vowel team or diphthong needed to spell each word. Students must look at each picture, determine the missing letters, and write the full word.
In all sets, corresponding pictures give meaning to the words as students write them. This makes them great vocabulary builders for all students, and especially for those learning English as a second language.
Two sets of ten to sixteen word cards are included for each of the following vowel team and diphthong pairs:
• ai and ay
• ee and ea
• ie and igh (trigraph)
• oa and ow
• oi and oy
• ew and ue
• au and aw
• ow and ou
• oo (long and short sounds)
These cards can be used in a variety of ways. In my own second grade classroom, I use them during my small group center rotations at the beginning of the week, when the weekly phonics and spelling skill is still new. I tape the cards around the classroom, give each student in the center group a clipboard, and send them on a scavenger hunt to find each word and record it on their recording sheets. There is also space at the bottom of each recording sheet for students to practice writing a sentence using one or two of the words. This activity could also be done as a whole-class scoot game.
Multiple recording sheet options for each pair and mixed practice recording sheets are included. Choose those that best meet the needs of your students.
