Beginning readers learn to decode words by sounding them out (blending the sound-spelling patterns). Phonics instruction will find these PowerPoint lessons for the variant vowel sounds to be extremely beneficial in teaching reading. Each sound in a word will appear for 2 seconds and then be followed by the subsequent sound. These lessons are ideal for those teachers who have projectors connected to their classroom computer. They are designed for whole group instruction, but would also work well with small groups with access to a computer. Variant Vowels 1 will cover r-controlled sounds - är (as in far); ər (as in fur); and ȯr (as in fore). These words are sometimes called the Bossy R words. Variant Vowels 2 will cover ů (as in foot) and ü (as in food). Variant Vowels 3 will cover ä (as in caw); ȯi (as in coil); and aů (as in cow).
