I created this packet for visual learners, struggling readers…really anyone can benefit from learning this syllable pattern strategy. It helps students grasp the concept of decoding 2 or more-syllable words and help them begin to apply this concept to their reading and spelling. Students are excited and empowered as they see these strategies work in their reading and spelling assignments. When students, as early as pre-school, are taught to look for the syllable patterns in words, instead of memorization of letters, students will engage in reading and spelling with great growth & success. The Closed & Open Syllable Pattern set and the Vce Pattern set is a great pre-cursor to this set, but not required.
I always begin syllable pattern lessons introducing Closed and open syllables. These two syllable patterns can be found in all of the other 6 syllable patterns in the English language.
As you initially introduce the open and closed syllables using the two posters, be sure to show students the hand-signs for each pattern. This is a multi-sensory strategy to help with retention of information. Remember there are SIX patterns the students will eventually learn! I love to play a game where I write a word – real or non-sense – on the board and student(s) show the hand-sign for pattern. This allows you to assess the students that need reinforcement of concept.
Once you have review open & closed syllables with your students, they are ready for this activity. Two new syllable pattern posters have been added to this set. Introduce Vowel –r Combinations in the accented and unaccented syllables using the information on the posters. There are two different activities to use with these word cards. The word cards come in one syllable and two syllables in order to show the different pattern situations. I guess some of the cards could be called ‘syllable cards’ b/c the 2 syllable word is divided into syllables on each card. The reason for this is so students begin to “look” at the pattern in words. Looking at each syllable card, students should decide what syllable pattern they see – open, closed, vowel-r combination. They can sort the syllables. Another activity is taking each syllable card identifying the pattern, physically putting the syllables together, reading the word, & ending with a multi-sensory writing activity. These activities will provide visual reminders/cues to aid in successful spelling and decoding of multi-syllable words. And most of the words lend to great vocabulary discussion, too. An extension writing activity would be to have students use the words in a sentence correctly so that the reader can understand its meaning.
