The Voyage of the Mimi was a video series that came out in the 80’s. Each episode has a short drama to get the student’s attention, and then a second part that is more educational. This first voyage will introduce you to the two main characters, the captain and his grandson. The boat is chartered for a science team that is going whale watching. The boat and its crew are in for an adventure. Each episode has a different science or social study topic. Examples are oceanography, history of scuba gear, hypothermia, magnetism or other science topics. This series is a great exposure to real life examples of how the topics they learn in the classroom are used in careers or in the real world.
How I use this in my classroom is that we start with watching one episode per day. Afterwards, the students fill in and complete the page that goes with the episode. The types of questions included are fill in the blank, multiple choice or select, or draw to respond.
Although the videos are seriously outdated, you will see on the level of technology used, the students love the videos. How can you get the videos? First I would look in your professional library, my school has them on VHS. I have read that they were also released on LaserDisc. It’s your lucky day! The videos are also on YouTube or iTunesU! Our third grade team now watches them strictly off YouTube. Parents have also kept their child up-to-date by watching them at home when their child was absent. This packet would be great for extra grades in both science and social studies. My grade level uses this at the end of the year, and we look forward to it every year! It grabs the students’ attention and is great for when the year closes and you need something more fun than regular worksheets. Trust me, this will be one of your favorite activities at the end of the year. Perfect for grades 3-6!
