WAIT is an Acronym for Why Am I Talking.
We as teachers often get caught up with the notion that what we say is golden, which is farther from the truth. We must take into consideration that our students’ voices need to be heard and valued. What they have to say can help catapult no only them, but their classmate’s performance levels on standardized tests. I have learned that some of my best and brightest students can explain a concept in ways I couldn’t, and their classmates are able to grasp the concept. That is why it is critical for teachers to allow open dialogue in the classroom.
Post this up in your classroom to remind yourself to WAIT and watch your classroom transform from a dictatorship to one that is warm and open to student perspectives (autonomy).
You can blow it up and laminate it at your local print center.
