This download is made with the non-reader in mind. It includes one set of playing cards to target articulation of /S/blend sounds, including /st/, /sp/, /sn/, /sw/, /sl/, /sk/, /sm/ and /sn/ while playing the classic card game of WAR. They are look alike playing cards with pictured items containing an /S/ blend sound super imposed on each card. Students are asked to say the item pictured each time they take their turn while playing the game. You can increase the complexity of the task by asking student to use words pictured in a sentence as appropriate. A list of the 56 different target words used is included in order to help the speech language therapist identify the pictured items if necessary. Also included are 4 JOKER cards that can be used as wild cards during game play. This game can be used during individual therapy sessions or in small groups of 2 students. Multiple games can be played simultaneously when additional students are in the group. A title sheet is also included and can be used as a label for the Ziploc bag that the cards may be stored in.
Just print on cardstock, laminate the cards for durability, cut apart and you are ready to go!
**The cards can be printed so that the backside is plain or shows a pattern. To have cards with patterned backs, simply set your printer to duplex printing (2 sided printing) or print on both sides of cardstock by manually reloading cardstock after the number cards have printed and print out the designed page.
HOW TO PLAY
To be the first player to collect all or the most playing cards.
Mix playing cards. Deal out the cards facedown to both players--each will get 28. Each player should keep their cards in a pile face down in front of them. Players then flip over the top card from their piles simultaneously. Have players say the target speech word pictured on their card. The player with the higher card (ace is high, two is low) takes both cards, placing them in a pile to the side of his playing stack. This continues until both players have exhausted their pile of cards, with each player turning over a card and the higher card winning. The only stoppage is in the case of "war" (see below).
After all cards are played, players take their new piles and either turn them over for a new round or shuffle them first. Players should agree beforehand which method to use.
This continues, with each player using his new piles, until one player collects all the cards and WINS the game or if time runs out the player with the most card WINS the game.
In the event of two cards of the same value being turned over, "war" is declared. Players place three cards facedown in the middle of the table, then simultaneously flip a fourth card face-up. The player with the higher of the two cards takes all the cards in the middle, including the facedown cards. If players tie again when they turn up the fourth card, they each play another four cards in the same fashion. This continues until someone has the higher card.
