During the school year I keep each student’s work in a binder as a portfolio. I purchase the kind of binders with clear front and back pockets that allow you to slide in a paper to personalize it. In the front I put a picture that they drew of themselves on the very first day of school. On the back I place their Kindergarten diploma. Throughout the year I put in a weekly writing sample, math pages, art projects (done on 8.5 x 11 paper) and their journals.
At the end of the year we color the enclosed pages and turn the portfolio into a Yearbook which I send home on the last day of school. All of their work is divided into categories: Math, Writing, Art. The students draw a picture of themselves as they are at the end of the year on the enclosed "cover" which I use as a title page. They also color in the “dividers” that mark each section of the Yearbook.
I have each student write a page about their favorite Kindergarten memory on the "School Memories" page and glue their photo in the box. They write their first and last names, as neatly as possible, on the two lines next to the photo. I then photocopy all of the students' pages so that they not only have their own page in their yearbook, but all of their friends' pages as well.
On the last day of school the students roam around the classroom collecting each other's "autographs" on the enclosed page.
Each page is available as a black and white student reproducible as well as a full color teacher sample!
