Unlike stellar constellations that appear in the same place in the sky at a given month year after year, planets will wander across the sky. THIS ACTIVITY WILL PLOT WHERE THE 5 VISIBLE PLANETS ARE FOR ANY DATE! Even though their motion is complicated, this activity involves picking numbers from five charts, adding the numbers and then locating a planet's position on an orbital diagram. The position of all five 5 planets can be added to the illustration. Also on the plot is the Earth. Visually, the chart can show students which planets will be in the night sky tonight.
An additional activity allows for a plot of planets on the date of March 10, 1982 when some people were afraid that the world was going to come to an end when all the planets got together on the same side of the Sun. It didn't happen!
