This is a creative writing assignment that I used in my classes when covering the Civil War, it deals with William T. Sherman. It is essentially a R-A-F-T paper which gives the student an opportunity to express his/her opinions regarding Sherman's strategy of "total war".
If you have never heard of a R-A-F-T paper before read up on it here: http://www.readingquest.org/strat/raft.html (there is also a link for printing a R-A-F-T template on the site, to get students started in their writing).
The assignment contains the directions for the activity and the questions that the student needs to address. It is best used after viewing the History Channel's documentary, "Sherman & The March to the Sea" (from Civil War Journal). Students do not need to view this documentary, however, to complete the assignment.
Once completed, I found this activity fostered a lot of debate/discussion concerning the appropriateness of "total war".
