Teachers! Grab this hyperdoc to go along with your close reading of the novel Wonder by RJ Palacio! What is a hyperdoc? A hyperdoc allows you to integrate digital resources and establish a blended learning environment. Embedded within the digital resource you will find different media formats, guided close readings for independent practice, sentence frames, and constructed responses to demonstrate understanding. Hyperlinks take students to articles, selected passages, and other media resources, like short stories and videos.

What’s Included? How does this connect to Wonder?

*First students compare the changes between original fairy tales and “flipped fairy tales.” Students will choose 1 of 3 provided fairytales (Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Three Little Pigs) to read. An organizer is provided for students to practice summarizing the text. Since this is a hyperdoc, it would be easy for teachers to modify the task to have students complete more than 1 fairytale and/or work in groups.
*Next, students will watch the “flipped” version of the fairy tale through YOUTUBE and consider how their perspective and understanding has changed now that they are hearing the same story told from a different point of view.
*Once students finish considering perspective with the fairy tales, organizers are provided for reading (or re-reading) two different chapters in WONDER.
*Finally, students complete a constructed response in which they apply their understanding of how perspective affects our understanding of plot and character.
*BUT IT DOESN’T END THERE! The very last task is to share their thoughts and opinions through a pre-made PADLET board. Teachers can make a copy (or remake) the PADLET or just comment on the original shared!
**This has been paired with the two chapters: “The Bleeding Scream” and “Ex-Friends.”
***Each of these chapters connects to the same circumstance but told from different characters’ points of view. While they aren’t a perfect mirror, you do get a better understanding of the character Jack and what happened. It’s a perfect correlation to teaching characterization as well! ****Teachers could easily adapt or change the intended chapters, or even use between readings of WONDER and AUGGIE & ME.

*A platform for distributing (either through a digitalized learning network like Google Classroom or sharing of the link).
